A Splitting-Detection Joint-Decision Receiver for Ultrasonic Intra-Body Communications

Ultrasonic intra-body communication (IBC) is a promising enabling technology for future healthcare applications, due to low attenuation and medical safety of ultrasonic waves the human body. A splitting receiver, referred as splitting-detection separate-decision (SDSD) introduced pulse-based IBCs, SDSD can significantly improve bit-error rate (BER) performance over traditional coherent-detection (CD) energy detection (ED) receivers. To overcome high complexity BER SDSD, joint-decision (SDJD) receiver proposed. The core idea SDJD split received signal into two streams that be separately processed by CD ED, then summed up joint decision variables achieve diversity combining. theoretical channel capacity are derived M-ary pulse position modulation ( M-PPM) PPM with spreading codes. derivation takes account noise, fading, estimation error. Simulation results verify analysis show both higher lower than ED receivers perfect estimation, while lowest imperfect estimation.
